Helping Partner Shelters in Need In fall of 2009, King County announced that it would close it's main animal shelter in Kent because of lack of funding and the possibility of flooding. Hundreds of dogs and cats would have to be placed in other shelters or euthanized. The Orcas APS decided to help and 2 dogs, 18 kittens, and 2 adult cats were brought to the Orcas shelter. The Kent episode was just one example of how the Orcas APS partners with other shelters in Washington to help
resolve over-capacity issues. As space permits, we are able to take in adoptable animals (usually dogs, because the demand for adoptable dogs exceeds the supply here on Orcas), saving many that might otherwise be euthanized in overcrowded off-island shelters. Judging from the responses of the lucky new owners, this is a program we want to continue. |
