2009 Volunteer of Year - Bob Waunch

Bob was indispensible to the shelter before it was even built. He attended a number of seminars to learn about what components make up a successful shelter building. Then he collaborated with the architect during the shelter’s design and construction, applying his previous building experience and volunteering his time as project leader. Since the shelter opened in 2003, Bob has been the first person APS calls when a maintenance project needs to be handled. He researches options for us, gets competitive bids, and sometimes does the work himself. We appreciate the thoroughness and good humor Bob brings to the maintenance and yard-work projects he handles for us. Bob is always ready to lend a hand at fundraising events, whether moving furniture around for rummage sales, helping with movie-premiere setup, or keeping track of bidding at the Wine Pairing Dinner. He designed the APS logo and the sign outside the shelter. He has generously donated the use of his airplane by flying supplies and animals to and from Orcas. Finally (though we’re sure we’ve failed to mention many of his other efforts on behalf of the Orcas APS), Bob has also contributed immeasurably by supporting the 24/7 dedication of his wife, Marsha, our Shelter Manager. The Orcas APS would not be what it is without him. Our gratitude is beyond words.
