PET SURRENDER
pet surrender
We understand that surrendering your pet is a difficult decision, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our goal is to help you explore all options to ensure your pet’s well-being and happiness, whether that means keeping them in your home or finding the perfect new one.
Let’s start with why you’re considering surrendering your pet. Sometimes, a little support or guidance can make all the difference in keeping your beloved pet with you.
Are veterinary expenses a concern?
If finances are an obstacle, Orcas APS has a veterinarian on staff and offers reduced-cost veterinary care for income-qualified pet owners. Share your pet’s health concerns with us—we may be able to help.
Has your landlord said you can’t keep your pet?
Did you know that Emotional Support Animals (ESA) are protected under the Fair Housing Act? If your pet provides emotional support, you might qualify for a letter from your physician stating the benefits of an ESA. Let’s discuss this option together.
Does your pet spend too much time alone?
Many pets adapt well to loving homes even if their owners have busy schedules. With the right enrichment activities, your pet can stay happy and healthy. We can suggest ideas and routines that work for both you and your pet.
Are you struggling with your pet’s behavior?
Surrendering your pet to a shelter may not resolve behavioral issues and, in some cases, could make them worse. Talk to us! We have training resources and tips that could improve life for both you and your furry friend.

If, after considering these options, you feel that surrendering your pet is the best choice, we’re here to guide you through the process. Taking extra steps to minimize stress for your pet is so important, and we’re happy to help you with the following options:
Courtesy Post - No surrender fee required! If your pet is spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations, we can share that they’re looking for a new home. We’ll post photos, accept applications, and share suitable matches with you. You’ll then decide which home is the best fit. This is the least stressful option for your pet, as they remain in their familiar environment.
Owner Foster - Requires a surrender fee. You can foster your pet while we actively work to find them a new home. During the day, your pet can be seen by potential adopters at the shelter but return home with you at night. We cover all necessary veterinary care, and once we find a match, an adoption fee applies.
Owner Surrender - Requires a surrender fee. This is the most challenging option for pets as they adjust to life in the shelter, which can be stressful. Behavioral issues may develop, making it harder to find them a new home. However, we provide veterinary care and work to rehome your pet, with an adoption fee applied upon placement.
We’re here to help you determine the best path for your pet. Contact us to talk about what works best for both of you.
