It takes a team to make things happen.

Orcas Animal Protection Society is a private, nonprofit animal shelter in San Juan County, Washington. We serve our community by providing safe shelter for stray and owner-released cats and dogs, operating an adoption program, and educating pet owners and youth about responsible ownership. We also provide low-cost spay and neuter services, emergency boarding for pets during an owner’s medical emergency, and transfer pets from overcrowded shelters across Washington. Our work is supported by generous friends like you.

Our Team

Our team includes a full-time executive director, a part-time veterinarian serving shelter and community pets, and skilled part-time support staff working together to meet each animal’s medical, behavioral, and daily care needs.

Our Executive Director

​Kristina’s love for animals began in childhood when she often brought home and cared for stray dogs and cats. After more than 20 years in the technology field, volunteering as a shelter dog walker inspired her to turn her passion into a fulfilling career. As Executive Director of PAWS of Grays Harbor, she found deep purpose in helping animals and serving her community. After a break from leading a busy, high-volume shelter, she was eager to bring her experience, compassion, and renewed energy to Orcas Island in 2019. Kristina is honored to be a part of this island community, where she can make a meaningful difference for animals and the people who love them.

President

Our Board President

Mariann Carrasco brings decades of experience in wildlife and natural resource management, environmental planning, and marine mammal conservation to her role as Board President. She also has extensive knowledge of animals with a compassionate approach to their health and well-being. Mariann’s lifelong dedication to animals and the natural world makes her a valued leader and advocate for the shelter. She is deeply committed to serving Orcas animals. Her calm leadership strengthens the shelter’s bonds with local pets, families and island neighbors.

Orcas Animal Protection Society is a tax-exempt organization receiving tax deductible contributions. We operate with transparency making available annual returns (Form 990) for three years after the due date, ​our application for exemption (OP - 1023), and our determination letter from the IRS showing our organization has tax-exempt status.
